This transparent woven curtain explores the thin veil between technological convenience and the waste it produces. Suspended almost invisibly in mid air, the work is activated by the viewer’s presence. As someone moves closer, a distance sensor triggers the lights, creating a moment of confusion, curiosity and sudden awareness.
Made from conductive thread, metal, LED lighting and electronic waste, reusing discarded technological materials this curtain confronts the hidden systems behind everyday consumption. The viewer becomes part of the circuit, physically activating the work while also becoming implicated in the questions it raises. Exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam as part of Rethinking Bauhaus in October 2019, the piece asks us to look more closely at the material traces of the technologies we depend on.
